Frequently Asked Questions
At Fabrication Specialists, we believe in clarity, craftsmanship and pride in every project we take on — whether it’s a bespoke staircase, balustrade, feature screen or architectural steel detail. We know that every project is unique, and our goal is to make the process smooth from first sketch through to final installation.
Here you’ll find answers to the general questions our clients often ask — from design and pricing through to lead times and installation. These FAQs are designed to give you a clear picture of how we work, what to expect and how we ensure quality fabrication across Auckland. If you can’t find the answer you need, we’re only a call or message away — we’re always happy to talk through your project.
Planning
-
Lead times vary depending on project complexity, materials, and workload. For simpler fabrications (e.g. standard handrails, gates, basic balustrades), expect something like 2–4 weeks. For custom architectural steelwork, staircases, feature steel or intricate designs, lead times can extend to 6–10 weeks (or more) depending on design, finishing, engineering requirements and consent / approvals.
-
We are based in Silverdale, Auckland, and service the Auckland region. We regularly take on projects across greater Auckland. For larger-scale or remote projects, we can discuss travel logistics, site visits, and transport.
-
Pricing is based on several factors: material type, scale & complexity, finishing, engineering/spec etc., and whether site work is involved (installation, finishing in situ). Because we focus on high-end quality, the quote may be higher than some competitors, but reflects our attention to detail, craftsmanship, durability, and full service from design through install.
-
Often yes, especially for custom or architectural projects. A site visit helps us assess access, existing structure, tolerances, any potential obstacles, and to take accurate measurements. For simpler jobs, photos, plans, or drawings may suffice.
-
Depending on your project (e.g. structural work, exterior installations, building consents), engineering certification may be required. You will usually need to engage a structural engineer for certain works, and ensure local council/building consent regulations are followed. We are happy to coordinate with your engineer/architect to ensure everything is compliant. We can also provide PS1’s and PS3’s for the work we do on your project if required.
-
Ensure access to site is possible (e.g. staging, scaffolding, clearance for crane or truck access if needed), any required consent or engineering sign-off is ready, and that any underlying surface or substrate is prepared (e.g. fixing points, foundations etc.). We’ll work with you to identify what is needed.
-
Usually a deposit is required at the start (e.g. on approval of quote or drawing), with milestone payments or balance on completion / install. Specifics will be in your quote / agreement.
-
You can reach out via our Request a Quote form, or email / phone us. We’ll set up an initial consultation, discuss your ideas, send through any drawings or references you have, then provide a detailed quote including materials, finishes, timeline, and expected costs.
Design
-
Yes — whether you come with full drawings, or just an idea, we can assist. We offer design tweaks, CAD/digital mock-ups, coordinate with engineers where needed to ensure structural adequacy, compliance, and that the final product is practical, safe, and beautiful.
-
Yes — we pride ourselves in custom work. If you have architect’s drawings or plans, we will work with them (and your engineer, as needed) to ensure the final product matches the intended style, proportions, detailing, and quality.
-
We use precise measurement tools, check existing conditions, laser levels, etc., and share mock-ups or templates where needed. For critical fit-in items, we often pre-assemble or dry-fit pieces in our workshop before install to minimise surprises.
Fabrication
-
We routinely work in mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, brass, copper, as well as various finishing options (powder coating, galvanising, brushed, polished, raw finishes, etc.). We’ll discuss the right material + finish for durability, aesthetics, and maintenance during your project. For more information see our Materials Guide.
-
We use accurate CAD modelling, work closely with engineers when required, have experienced welders and tradespeople, and conduct quality checks at multiple stages: during fabrication, finishing, and again on installation. We also ensure that finishes (welds, surfaces, joinery) meet high standards.
-
Our focus is high-end architectural & detailed fabricated steel and metalwork. We generally do not take on large structural steel framing etc., but we can handle smaller structural elements (e.g. door portals, steel frames for doors, smaller load-bearing components) when engineering and compliance are in place.
-
We understand that plans can shift — change requests during fabrication or install may be possible, but may affect cost and timeline. We’ll always communicate change orders clearly: what the impact is in terms of price, finish, or delivery.
-
Absolutely — our gallery showcases residential, commercial, interior & exterior fabrication works. We’re happy to share photos, case studies, and sometimes physical samples of materials/finishes. Seeing what we’ve done helps you visualise quality.
Installation & Aftercare
-
We handle transportation and installation in many cases. For install, we ensure we have the right tools, access, fixings, and that it integrates properly with existing structure (concrete, timber, etc.). We'll plan for site conditions and access during quoting.
-
Maintenance depends on material & finish. For example, stainless steel needs less upkeep; mild steel may need periodic touch-ups or repainting, especially in exposed or coastal environments. We’ll recommend cleaning, coating and protective options to prolong lifespan and look.
-
We stand by our work. If any defects, damage, or finishing issues are discovered, we’ll assess them and correct as needed. Warranty / guarantee terms will be clearly defined in the quote / contract (e.g. weld integrity, coating finish etc.).
-
Yes — we provide guarantees on workmanship and the materials we use. Details depend on material, finish, exposure conditions etc. We’ll clarify in your quote what is covered and for how long.
